Power continues to be restored while flooding persists in southern Florida.
Red Cross Response to Hurricane Irma
A week after landfall, the American Red Cross is part of a large team of partners who have launched a massive relief response to provide safe shelter, food and comfort to people who have been affected by Hurricane Irma. On Wednesday night, more than 13,700 people were provided refuge from Hurricane Irma and Maria in at least 207 government and Red Cross evacuation shelters across Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This includes:
-In Florida, more than 1,680 people in 24 evacuation shelters due to Irma;
-In Puerto Rico, 10,600 people in 175 government evacuation shelters due to Irma and Maria;
-On the U.S. Virgin Islands, more than 1,350 people in six evacuation centers due to Irma and Maria; and
-To date, more than half a million (568,000) cumulative overnight stays following Irma and Maria.
More than 2,500 Red Cross workers are responding to Irma now, with more than 380 volunteers on the way. This includes more than 150 Red Crossers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These workers have:
-Along with our partners, served more than 931,000 meals and snacks across six states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
-Distributed more than 176,000 relief items like diapers, bug spray, cleaning supplies, coolers, and comfort kits containing deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other hygiene items across six states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
-Mental health and health services professionals have provided more than 18,000 contacts to provide support and care to those affected across six states and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
-More than 160 emergency response vehicles have been activated to help.
After Irma’s landfall, disaster workers in Puerto Rico assisted more than 350 families to replace necessities such as clothing, shoes, food and medicine. The Red Cross also distributed more than 14,400 relief supplies and provided health services and emotional support to families and evacuees.
On the U.S. Virgin Islands the Red Cross handed out more than 4,500 relief items and served 9,400 meals and snacks to people in need.
