Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of people through force, fraud, or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit. Men, women, and children of all ages and from all backgrounds can become victims of this crime, which occurs in every region of the world. The traffickers often use violence or fraudulent employment agencies and fake promises of education and job opportunities to trick and coerce their victims. According to the Trafficking in Persons Report produced by the State Department, approximately 28 million men, women & children are victims of some form of human trafficking. Human trafficking happens when adults & children are extorted to work or provide services using force, fraud, or coercion and it includes labor and sex trafficking. A U.S. Justice Department study found that 83% of sex trafficking victims identified in the U.S. were American citizens. Human trafficking ranks as the fastest growing & second largest criminal enterprise in the world and generates approximately $150.2 billion worldwide.
