The strongest tropical storm to hit the southern hemisphere has forced thousands of people from their homes and cut off power supplies for essential services. The Malawi government today declared a state of emergency. The poorest families are most affected as their homes are made of mud and cloth and are easily destroyed, and the death toll is expected to rise further over the coming days. The floods have badly damaged farmers’ crops. Most communities are affected, their fields are waterlogged, and their homes have collapsed. Many families have lost their homes and are seeking shelter in schools. The number of deaths is expected to rise as we are still at the peak of the cyclone, with heavy rains and winds still having a devastating impact. We have created this fund to provide relief to survivors through emergency supplies like food, water, medicine, and longer-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild.
